The final interim challenge I’ll be doing is the Genderbend Challenge. No one actually nominated me for this, but I did it anyway. Very presumptuous of me, I know. But I know I loved seeing it on other people’s blogs, so I guess my hope is that some of you will be interested in seeing what my characters look like as the opposite sex, too.

I didn’t do a pretty photoshoot like a lot of people I’ve seen, because I absolutely loathe posing sims and find it really tedious, lol. So here is the Gen 3 family, in all their unedited glory!

First up, we have Dion.

He looks… pretty much as I would have expected, really. Sims 3 is really terrible at a lot of genetics-related things, one of which is how proportions are converted when switching from male to female, or when the sim ages. Ever had a child sim that was super cute, then when they aged up they looked like a duck? Yeah. (Cody from Gen 1 is my worst example of this – comparison here and here so you can see what I’m talking about.) As a rule, I don’t like to edit sims who are born in-game, but the way my female sims look does not tend to translate well to the male face. So lately I’ve taken to editing my sims a bit to make up for it, which to me feels like cheating and I feel really guilty about it. But my poor male sims deserve a fair shot. Otherwise, they just end up looking like that. ^

Next is Dion’s wife, Lucy.

This is basically what my female sims look like if I try to edit them so that their male children won’t be ugly. Objectively, she looks okay, but I’m personally not a huge fan. Side note – that’s another thing I’m trying to work on, introducing more genetic diversity to my sims, mainly through the looks of the spouse-to-be. There’s more than one way to skin a cat, as they say, and there’s also more than one way to make a sim look pretty. We’ll see how it goes.

This is their eldest daughter, Gabrielle.

She’s kind of a weird mix of her parents, but mostly she looks like Lucy. Except somehow… worse. To be fair to poor Gabrielle, if this was someone else’s sim, I’d think she looked fine. But I’ve always known that Gabriel wasn’t as good-looking as Hugo. I guess I thought he’d look better as a girl?

Next up is the middle child and eldest twin, Hopper.

Damn, what a cutie! The suit jacket doesn’t hurt either. Makes sense though, because Hope is basically the girl version of Luc. Personally, I don’t think she’s as pretty as most of the other girls I’ve had in my game, but I guess she can take comfort in the fact that her alternate-universe self is fine af.

And finally, we have the youngest, Helga.

She’s actually pretty cute, but not at all what I was expecting. I thought Hugo looked so much like Diana that Helga would basically just be a clone of Di. I guess Helga’s genetics are more mixed than I gave her credit for. I honestly wouldn’t mind having an actual sim that looked like this. I took these screenshots before I decided on the heir, and honestly Helga’s looks as opposed to Gabrielle’s was a strong element in Hugo’s favour.

So there we have it! I’m all caught up now. Stay tuned for chapter 4.2, and the continuation of “Gabrielle”‘s story.

  1. That’s so funny that you’re so harsh on your sims looks! I actually think they all look pretty good, even Dion!
I’ve tried the entire legacy to get the Lemons genetics to not be bland. It’s so easy to stick to what you think is pretty, instead of expanding a bit! My gen 3 spouse, Prisha, is the only one I’ve made so far, and I really tried HARD to make her different than my general approach to pretty.
Can’t wait for the next chapter, by the way! ❤️

    1. Haha, I’m glad it’s just me then! I totally agree about breaking away from your own ideal of beauty when making sims, though. Prisha is gorgeous and I think she turned out really well, for the record 🙂 Every time I make a new sim, I’m always trying to break away at least a little bit from what I instinctively go for to make my sims “good looking”.
I appreciate the enthusiasm, sorry to have let you down with the long wait 😦 I’m working on the next chapter today though, so hopefully it will be out pretty soon!

  2. Aw, I quite like all of them, but Hopper and Lucy are my faves! I totally get on the genetic diversity issue. I have a problem with wanting all my main characters to look good lmao, but like you said there are many ways to approach attractive features, which I’m going to work really hard on next gen!
I’m very excited for the chapter 😊

    1. Man, I feel like everyone was so excited and then I just… didn’t deliver. You’ve all probably forgotten all about Gabriel by this point, lol!
Genetic diversity is a hard one, and it’s really easy to obsess over your characters and think that they don’t look good enough. Often when I’m out and about, I notice attractive people and then I deliberately think about why they’re attractive, or sometimes I notice things about them that aren’t perfect, like their nose for example, and how they’re attractive regardless. And as you say, there are so many ways of being good looking. Just think about celebrities you think are attractive – chances are they don’t all look exactly the same! It’s easy to think badly of your own characters but mostly from an objective standpoint, your worries are usually unfounded. For example, you say you like Lucy, but I thought she turned out one of the worst of the lot!

      1. I’m sure it will be great, I’m still very much excited!
You have a great point there. Now that I think of it, the celebrities I find good looking have a big spectrum (although that may be influenced by personality). I’m eager to try achieve that kind of range in my sim-making soon!

        1. I”m glad, and good luck with your sims! Obviously you’re right in that personality has a lot to do with attractiveness, but of course characters have personalities too! Just like real people, they definitely don’t have to be perfect looking to be perfectly attractive 😉

  3. I think they all turned out really well! I love your sims and it’s fun seeing them in their alternate universe. 😀 I know what you mean about feeling guilty about changing some genetics. Until now, I’d worked with my born in game sims as they were but when Bea aged up to teen, I couldn’t do it. For instance, where her chin would normally be, was her mouth. Seriously, it was super low on her face. Her nose was a big mess, too. So, despite the vow I made to myself, I did a little plastic surgery on her. I hope I don’t have to do that again because, as mentioned before, I feel really guilty about it.

    1. Aw thanks Kymber! I often worry that my sims aren’t as good or as pretty as other people’s, so it’s nice to hear that my concerns are more or less unfounded. I agree that “plastic surgery” on sims is ideally to be avoided, but sometimes it’s hard to help. I’ve never liked changing my sims’ genetics and I don’t do it very often, I just try to alter the family gene pool more “naturally” by making the spouses with more of the features I want the kids to have, lol. I don’t usually edit eye or hair colours either, except when they don’t make any sense at all. Like, have you ever had a sim born with that weird greenish-brown hair, or strangely coloured highlights, that seem like the game just randomly generated them? When I change that kind of thing, I justify it for “story purposes” haha.

      1. LOL Yes, exactly. I do the same. When I changed Bea’s face, even though I didn’t do anything horribly drastic, I felt so guilty. LOL But, like you said, it’s for the story! 😂
